Anatolian Shepherd Dogs (ASD) are working Dogs native to the country of Turkey. There is a great misconception about the nature of these dogs. The breed is an ancient breed that is around 6,000 years old.
Here is America those that have live stock depend on these dogs to protect their flock or herd from savage predators such as wolves, coyotes, mountain lions, and bears. In the USA those that own live stock let their Anatolian Shepherd do most if not all of the work defending the most vulnerable within the group.
This is unfortunate. If we take a closer look at the Anatolian Shepherd we come to understand just how Interdependent the Anatolian and the Shepherd really were. Though they are fairly independent thinking dogs their instincts from ancient times vertebrates into present day. These dogs have been breed to protect the live stock and the Shepherd - not just the live stock.
These dogs traveled with the Shepherd to and from the places frequented with the Shepherd. The Anatolian Shepherd worked in harmony with the Shepherd - but never by themselves. Even today in Turkey many people still use the Anatolian Shepherd Dog as hunting dogs and live stock protection dogs. Their tradition of working in harmony with man continues strong in the Turkish Mountainside.
The Anatolian will make excellent companions to take on hunting trips, guard your family, or protect your live stock.
The bonding time for Anatolian Shepherds is between 8-16 weeks old, after 16 weeks it is harder to transition the dog to bond to new things. Therefore, make sure you socialize your puppy correctly. Your puppy that turns into a guardian will protect all that it feels is part of the family - either human or animal.
Also, to those who may want an Anatolian for a watch dog to protect their property or love ones NO training is required! Anatolian Shepherds have about 6,000 years of instinct build directly into their genetics. All you need to do is socialize your dog early with the people or property you with to have the dog protect and they will naturally do what is necessary to protect and defend.
Our puppies are socialized early to be great working companions that will continue this legacy and protect humans and live stock alike.
As a special note to those brothers and sister in the survival and preparedness community - their is no better survival dog than the Anatolian Shepherd, period!
